This and That...

What I learned this week is hosted by JoLynn atMusings of a Housewife -

Today is one of those days that I could say so much and yet so few of those thoughts are actually coming together so I am going for the "list it" approach -

1. After having her tonsils and adenoids removed Hailey was back at the Dr. on Sunday (yes Sunday) with a double ear infection - Riddle me that one

2. After having her tonsils and adenoids removed Hailey has developed a squeak in her voice and to be totally honest - we are hoping it will go away

3. Summer break started 15 days ago and we yet to make it to the pool - first it was because of the surgery and lately it has been the weather - though I have to admit I am LOVING this cooler summer weather - I am a winter girl.

4. When scheduling a garage sale to finally take care of THIS problem...it would be smart to keep to look at your calendar and NOT schedule it over top of your daughters Post Op appt. If you do you will find yourself on the phone begging the scheduler to find something/anything that she can squeeze you in for this week so you can find out about the aforementioned squeak and more...

5. I was excited to receive some preview copies of the new TNT shows late last week. Some of them had already premiered others are premiering tonight! I am really looking forward to watching Saving Grace - this show is right up my ally, I screened Hawthorne with "him" last night and we were both intrigued - said it was "tivo worthy" but also talked about how Pilots are not usually the best - do you remember the Seinfeld Pilot? did it suck you in? Not I! And lastly if you are not totally fed up with reality TV yet - Wedding Day also premiers tonight - and while this show is NOT my cup of tea I am sure it will provide lots of viewing pleasure for many!

Knock yourself out

Have you ever thought about that saying?

Knock yourself out.

Lauren has. She even asked me about it. It went a little like this:

Lauren: Mom, what does Knock yourself out really mean?

Mom: stutter, stumble, stuck - Um Well people say it when they want you to go ahead and do whatever it is your aksing or talking about

Lauren: yeah, I get that but what does Knock Yourself Out mean

Mom: (vividly picturing a TKO with Mike Tyson in my head) decides this must be the answer - "well in boxing when a fighter knocks out the other fighter, which means hits him so hard he goes down and can't get back up, he is considered the winner and that is considered very cool - so I guess if you Knock Yourself Out that would be considered cool too.

Lauren: "Oh."

I don't think I convinced her, I don't think I explained it well and I am not even sure I got it right...so off to GOOGLE LAND I go - and here is what I got

1. knock yourself out
Equivalent to "Go for it"
"Can I have a piece of your burrito?" "Knock yourself out."

2. Knock yourself out
A term for: Do whatever the hell you want, it doesn't bother me.
"dad, can i go to the park?"

"Can you get there yourself?"

"Yeah" "well then, knock yourself out."

3. knock yourself out
Same as "go for it" or "go nuts". If you really dont care at all about a person doing/taking something you say "knock yourself out" as in to do/eat until you pass out (if you really want to). Same as "go for it" or "go nuts".
Person 1: "Hey man, can I have some beer?"

Person 2: "Yeah, Knock yourself out"

4. Knock yourself out
to work hard to achieve something, usually implying success
Wow, Mary! This is a great party. You really knocked yourself out. It seems every time you give a party you really knock yourself out.

SO there you have it - lots of examples of how to use the phrase but no real definition of Knock Yourself Out -

So if you can help me out - find me a definition to give to Lauren that will satisfy her curious mind - Go ahead - Knock yourself out!

Time to go to bed

What time do you go to bed? Your kids? You know they say bedtimes are important. We have bedtimes in our house and we adjust them accordingly by age and need for sleep - however sometimes they fail us miserably.

Case 1:

Hailey -

3 years old -

Bedtime 7pm

Natural Wake Time - 6am

Hours slept per night: 9-10 (on a good night)



Case 2:

Lauren -

8 Years old -

Bedtime - 8:30

Natural wake time - 6:30 weekdays, 7:30 weekends

Hours slept per night: 10 -11



We have attemped many scenerios to increase the sleep hours to the recommended number in case #1. Though we fail, because she wakes up a lot in the night and if she sleeps even 5 minutes in the car during the day she won't fall asleep till well after 8pm. Desperately hoping her tonsils are part of this problem and a natural change will occur after her surgery!

Case #2 was ticking and rolling along just fine about about 10 days ago when she became difficult to wake on school days and no longer represented a natural wake time during the week.

Our solution? Case #2 will get a new bedtime, a bit earlier - moving to 8:00 for the rest of the school year to ensure she gets the sleep she needs and the we get the peace we need! Lauren is NOT happy about this change of events - but I am not going to spend the next 10 years dragging her butt out of bed everyday!

What's wrong with my cat?

Did I get your attention?

We don't have a cat.

But when Justin Matott visited Lauren's school on Friday he told the funniest story about his childhood cat it even had Hailey "pee your pants" laughing. I don't dare re-tell the story for fear of Agent retaliation or worse but I will tell you that when his CAT books is published it is going to be a MUST READ!

And I will also tell you that Lauren spent half the evening reenacting parts of his presentation and the book she is reading right now GO ASK MOM - it was so fun to see all the excitement! It went a little like this

i don't know...we will have to ask dad when he gets home.

There was so much more to this, but like I said...I don't dare divulge...

I had never met Justin only worked with him online and I have to say he was just as wonderful in person. He really hit a home run with his Anti Bullying message in our middle school and those kids were walking the halls and the playground still talking about him and what all he said. They were telling all the teachers and I am willing to bet their parents tonight as well!

Justin was kind enough to visit our school as a favor to me, in doing so I learned of some of the many things he does for kids, schools and more. Lauren also did her school play today (purple bearded pirate) but I am still working on that post! Hopefully tomorrow!

Very Awarding

I was blessed this week in a bloggy kind of way! It was very Awarding! Anita - at A Wife, A Woman, A Mom - Anita - a quick friend. How often can you say that? I made a quick friend. I feel like I have known Anita forever and it has only been a couple of weeks. She writes with emotion you can feel about her family, she also loves to read and has twin Teen Daughters and an 11 year old son.

I don't know who found who but I am glad we were found! Thanks Pam and Anita - and here's to many good reads ahead! It would be so "lovely!"

I pick Lindsay at Bytes of Memory - Lindsay and her adorable son Sammy have been brightening my days for months now - watching him grow, learn and fumble has been a blast - I hope I get follow Sammy growing up for a long time (and Lindsay too! - well not the growing up part)

Crumby People

I am wondering - Are you a crumby person? Is someone in your family rather crumby?

Chances are if you own a dog you can't even answer this question (ha, didn't think I was going there did you).

You see we had 2 dogs, then we had 1 dog and while I used to complain about the dog hair...I had NO idea just how crumby everyone in my family was until we had no dogs.


I have to sweep everyday, YES everyday - because there is a difference between stepping on dog hair and stepping on bread crumbs, cheese crumbles, and other various crumby foods.

So I ask you this, if you have a dog may I please borrow him for 5 minutes a day for the rest of my life?

Earth Day, Cookie Cutters and a drunken snowman

Today was Earth Day, that that it was. We played hookie from Lauren's school because they were taking one of their famous long distance, longer than the school day field trips that I don't believe in and we went to see the movie Earth. Near by in the melting snow I found these earthen treasures

We LOVED the movie - even Hailey sat very well through most of it, she was fidgety at times but she was also able to provide a full recap after the show! The movie was well done, well narrated - made us laugh, made us wonder and made us smile! Here is my quick once over of the movie SPOILER - DON'T read unless you really want to know - like if you're considering NOT going for some reason or want to pre-screen it for your little ones! If you choose NOT to read then scroll past the italics for the rest of the post!

Since it debuted on EARTH day - one could easily assume that it is about global warming and the harm humans may or may not be causing to our planet. However, humans were never even mentioned, it was truly about the Animals and how they live. It starts with baby polar bears and their mother in hibernation and moves to what they do for food, survival and "growing up" once summer comes. It follows a whale family on their 4000 mile migration across the ocean for warm waters and shrimp to eat from the safe and empty crystal clear waters where they deliver and keep their babies for a while, they meet a shark on the way (beautiful footage). It follows caribou across the dessert they meet a jaguar (a scary but not gory moment here), it follows penguins doing nothing but being cute for a few minutes. There was a scene about when the winter turns to summer on the ??? hemisphere (I need to go back to school) and all the ice melts and the grasslands bloom and flood and the monkeys wade through the water, so cute and confused, but the other animals love the flood season. (HUGE SPOILER AHEAD) It goes back to the polar bears at the end because the dad went too far out onto the frozen sea in search of seals and got stranded when summer hit, it follows him back to land (mentioning the warming planet) and he tries to take down walruses though they aren't his normal prey and he fails and he dies - but they make it look like he lays down and goes to sleep. (MAJOR SPOILER OVER) There is a fight between Lions and elephants that is awesome! There are storms in the rain forest and a mention of how much of the earth rain forests make up. It is awe inspiring watching how some wild animals protect their babies when predators are near!! OK, that is all I can think of right now! All in all I loved the movie, I recommend it for all ages - (well maybe not babies!)

Now, what I want to know is: Here is my movie ticket, Disney has said they will plant a tree for each ticket sold today - did they? How would I know? Do I get to name my tree like when you buy a star? (HA HA)

Moving on: Many have wondered about the cookies from the Juicy Juice Party. I love my alphabet cookie cutters. I hunted them down when Lauren was three! We have spelled many a word with cookies. I grabbed my tin, and took some pictures for all to see!

There is even a recipe on the back! How cool is that? I don't use that recipe, didn't even notice it till I had my camera aimed - but totally cool!

So mine came from William Sonoma - but they don't carry them anymore so I did some shopping for you. I found these Harold's Kitchen Alphabet Cookie Cutters, Set of 26 at Amazon but they don't come in a tin and I found these at Amazon in a box Alphabet Cookie Cutter Set and I found these at some random store as well!! Happy cookie making!

Also I felt the need to share this little ditty with everyone - during our blizzard last weekend (one week ago today through the Juicy Juice Party) we made this cute little guy on party day.

and because we live in Colorado and as soon as the snow stops falling the snow starts melting this is what we had left by the time the party was over. I like to call him our drunken snowman:

Oh, and it is going to be 81 degrees out tomorrow, the girls are going to be in shorts (not my white legs) and the snow is ALL GONE!

Copying My Friend

My Friend Bonnie had a post on her blog today that was full of all kinds of randomness. From time to time we have so many thoughts we want to get on the blog and just can't pull them together into a valid, postworthy story to tell. So today I copy my friend Bonnie and I bring you all that is random with me.

1. Bonnie got a new bloggy layout complete with third column, new background color, new signature, a little spring in the header and a new post divider. I Did this last night. She had been asking for weeks and I kept forgetting! SORRY BONNIE. Go check it out and let us know what you think!

2. Facebook is great for connecting with people you want to connect with, but what about those who your not sure you really care about? I mean if we hated each other from 1988 to 1991 (the only four years we new each other) why do I want to suddenly become your friend in 2009? I get the whole by gones thing... but do I need to make friends with someone I was never friends with? Does it somehow make me a better person, is it going to make my life fuller? I don't know. I just don't get it.

3. If your willing please Tweet the Ficklets giveaway or post to it on your blog! I really do think the mom entrepreneur and her product are fabulous and I would love to help her spread the word even more! And YES, I am begging. The giveaway officially ends at midnight.

5. Hailey and I will be visiting her Dr. on Monday at Noon to discuss this mess she is in, I think it might be a tonsil problem but who am I? I don't have a PHD that's for sure.

6. Have you ever noticed that I sometimes make up words when I blog? Apparently spell check doesn't like words like "postworthy", or "bloggy" - but I don't care - they make sense to me!

7. We are expecting another dumping of snow tomorrow or tonight or maybe never, so hard to tell in Denver. We waited all winter for winter and now that Spring has Sprung Winter showed up as well. If the storms "stays on track" we could see another foot of snow by Sunday morning. The Good news...I am AT HOME and don't have to go anywhere! The other good news is I LOVE SNOW. I love to watch it snow, I love to see the snow in the sunlight, I even don't mind shoveling the snow! But I will forgo this job to "he" and his snow blower if it is more than about 6 inches...I am no fool!

8. we just spent 7 days and 6 nights relaxing in Beaver Creek and today Hailey has school, tomorrow Lauren has rehearsals and life is beginning again and reality bites. Sometimes I just want to chuck it all and move to shack in the woods and live the simple life (whatever that is) -

Yes it was I

Ok, yes yesterday's picture was me, in 1976 at Hailey's age...by my families Christmas tree! I was SHOCKED at how many people thought it was Lauren - I figured I would get a lot of Hailey guesses! As you can see they did NOT get their hair from me...I had very little hair at the same age Hailey is now!

In other News: We are going home today, Lauren was still awake a 11:00 last night and I don't know how many times I had to tell her "coming into my room is not going to help you fall asleep". She is our GOOD sleeper, I don't know what was wrong but I am certainly in for a long day today!

We are almost done with the "last" puzzle for this trip. My folks pretty much hate me for buying this one and I pretty much don't blame them

What I learned this week

I learned so much this week and yet I probably learned nothing at all.

1. When the Comcast goes out mid-post nothing can save your work and the little notice at the bottom of the blogger screen that says your work is not saved is a devilish reminder

2. Leaving home "early" to beat the storm may not be a good idea

3. A young child can have a fever for more than 29 days and yet be diagnosed with "nothing"

4. Having a great big Bloggy party on Tales from a Nightstand for the month of April is a lot of work, especially when Comcast goes out and you can't save anything.

I am not bitter, Comcast, not at all.

9 Volts anyone?

So it was Wednesday Morning - 5:11 AM and I was awakened by a gentle little MA MA, MA MA (ok, it wasn't so gentle)

I rolled over to a devil child sweet little Hailey by my bedside "what do you need Hailey?"

"Um, Ma Ma, My clock is going crazy"

So I look over and sure enough mine is too...blinking 3:11am blink, blink, blink...OMG - grab the Blackberry, see what time it really is and say to Hailey "that's ok, mine is too. Go back to bed and we will fix it in the morning" (uh, it is morning but it worth a try to get her to go back to bed anyway!)

Off she toddles - and "he" moans "Just so you know it is not 3:11 in the morning" - Thanks for the reminder honey as if Hailey and her MA MA's weren't enough

SO I learned that I need some 9 volts so my clocks (or at least hers) won't GO CRAZY when the power goes out.

I learned that I SO can't stand being called MA MA over and over again...I love Jan and Stan but

Mama mama mama (inside outside upside down) comes to mind and I don't want to be MA MA.

And since MA MA has carried on through out the week and now "he" is doing his best Hick impersonation and calling me MA MA and himself PAAAA (with a big drawl) I am about sick of MA MA

SO there you have it. I need a whole lot of 9 volts and a little less MA MA.

Monday Monday

****UPDATED****

It is Monday and a good friend of mine is having surgery today and in less than 3 weeks another good friend of mine is having surgery. SO, I am in tummy churned, can't take my mind off my friends mode.

Bonnie has blogged openly about her surgery and has a great attitude. If you click over and read the post I linked to you should also go read her more recent posts about her impending surgery. It should be a simple procedure and she should be home tonight! Resting comfortably on the couch while her lovely boys and amazing husband dote on her for a few days!!! Bonnie, My thoughts are with you and your family today! Please shoot me a message when you are feeling well!

And to my other good friend...who only randomly reads my blog...I am glad you got it scheduled and please let me know if I can do ANYTHING when the time comes.

***UPDATE*** I heard from Bonnie's wonderful husband Mark and the surgery went well. Bonnie was in recovery at the time and he was going to get to see her soon! Thanks for all your well wishes!

In case you ever wondered?

Just in case, I mean seriously I am here to educate right?

Ok, so just in case you ever wondered what would happen if you got your bread bag a little too close to your hot glass top stove - and I do mean too close, you don't have to actually set it on the hot stove...I didn't-

There you have it.

Now you don't have to try it for yourself.

You don't have to get out razor blades or scrub with your stove top cleaner till your shoulder hurts.

What did I learn this week? I have been thinking about this post for days. And, Frankly, I don't know what to type.

I did learn a lot, like some certain things about a certain dance studio that I certainly don't like very much.

I also learned a bit about facebook and as my husbands friend calls it the "hamster wheel of the web".

I learned a thing or two about what my Grandfather has been up to in a letter I got from him, I also learned that he CAN write legibly just never has before now!

I learned that at least one of my friends has scheduled their surgery

I re-learned how to write a limerick and had fun with it.

I seem to be learning that after February, March is VERY long month that may never actually end.

I learned that you can be on Amoxicillan for more than a week and still run a low grade fever (or at least Hailey can)

And last but not least (I am sure) just today I learned that it is possible to sleep past 5am and not get up til 6:30 and actually have to rush about your morning a bit. (bummer)

Much ado about FaceBook

I have himmed, I have hawed, I have even poked fun. But tonight, on "he who would rather not be named" urging I have joined. I am messing with page and looking up old friends. Scary. Weird. Kind of feel like I am evesdropping on their lives. Oh well, I will let you know if I keep it up.

In the meantime, thanks for listening to me whine last night. As of right now we are sticking out dance through Peter Pan then making decisions, we have not called the Dr., the room in the basement is still a mess and I am losing the Limerick Votes...but I want to thank all those that voted as it was SUPER fun - no matter who wins!

Have I ever told you how much I love Dr. Seuss? Well, I do - we had Lauren's Nursery painted with a mural of pictures from Seuss books (now Hailey's room) and we have a 6 foot tall cat in the hat too!

The cat traveled with us in the car to preschool last week for Seuss's Birthday - It is SUPER fun to drive with a six foot cat in the hat in your passenger seat. Let me tell you! Anyway - thought I would share a couple pictures of Hailey with the cat tonight:
